Bio
Yuchen Zhan (b. 1992, China) is a skilled painter, currently living in Brooklyn, New York, working primarily in oil, watercolor, and charcoal. Deeply inspired by the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Zhan’s work is rooted in the rich visual language of Impressionism, Art Nouveau, and the Vienna Secession. For Zhan, this period represents the pinnacle of artistic achievement—a time when rationalism, scientific discovery, and bold experimentation coalesced to transform art in both form and meaning.
He views the artists of that era not merely as inheritors of classical tradition, but as innovators who synthesized centuries of technique into new, visionary aesthetics. Their work, grounded in skill yet unafraid of change, resonates deeply with his own artistic goals. Alongside painting, Zhan finds inspiration in the era’s architecture and design—timeless expressions of beauty, structure, and creativity that continue to influence his visual sensibility.
With this historical foundation, Zhan is committed to developing a unique contemporary style that channels the spirit of that golden age. Through careful observation, technical refinement, and a love for detail, he seeks to create work that speaks across time—where the past and present meet on the canvas in a language both familiar and new.
Zhan earned his Bachelor of Fine Art degree in Painting and Drawing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and is currently pursuing Master of Fine Art degree in Painting at the New York Academy of Art. His work has been exhibited in group shows in Chicago and New York. He has been featured in American Impressionist Society magazine and is a member of the Portrait Society of America and Oil Painters of America.
